Veteran fans of Marvel’s Spider-Man comic will be aware of the existence and the impact of symbiotes in the world of the superhero. Forming a major set of antagonists, symbiotes have appeared in the comics, the Spider-Man movies, as well as in Spider-Man games. And the latest addition, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PlayStation 5 is no different.
To enlighten the unknown, Symbiotes, who were originally known as Klyntar, are a race of aliens in the world of Marvel’s Spider-Man. The first ever symbiote to appear in the series is none other than the infamous villain Venom aka the V-252.
In the Marvel universe, the Symbiotes were created billions of Earth years ago by an ancient and immortal being known as Knull. In his war with the cosmic beings called Celestials, Knull created four weapons or four living creatures that he would call the Klyntar, who would later be known as symbiotes, to destroy the many Celestials.
The Celestials intended to bring light into the universe while Knull only desired darkness. After Klyntar helped Knull slay every Celestial in the universe, Knull discarded them off his body using flames.
Post that the symbiotes had their own shares of deception multiple times before they decided not to live harmoniously with any beings, and that dominance would be their way.
Coming back to symbiotes in Spider-Man 2, here are the Symbiotes who appear in Insomniac’s latest game.
How many Symbiotes are there in Spider-Man 2?
Marvel Universe has more than 40 known symbiotes, of which only some appear in Spider-Man 2. They are:
Venom
Venom is by far one of the most iconic antagonists of Spider-Man. Venom’s appearance in Spider-Man 2 is truly terrifying, giving the two superheroes a really tough time.
He is seen corrupting Peter and Harry throughout the story. During a crucial moment in the game, Venom leaves Harry and merges with a dying Peter, thus forming this universe’s iconic black suit. He also takes down Kraven the Hunter and ends up being the final antagonist of this game.
Venom’s presence and role were so strong in the game that fans are asking for a special Venom spin-off, and the developers said they won’t mind making one. Some of Venom’s most fatal abilities include body shape manipulation, possession, and spider-sense stealth.
Scream
Scream is one of the four original klyntar or symbiote created by Knull. In Spider-Man 2, Venom turns MJ into Scream, which is a yellow and red symbiote.
Her distinct color scheme and massive hair make her easily recognizable. After Mary Jane is turned into Scream, Peter is forced to battle his loved one in the story as Venom reveals his true intentions.
Scream’s abilities include sonic scream, hair-like tendrils, mallet-like tendrils, and Symbiote biology.
Anti-venom
The anti-venom symbiote is a combination of a chemical bond, originally born when Martin Li accidentally infuses the remnants of the Venom symbiote within Eddie Brock’s body in an attempt to cure Eddie’s cancer. Spider-Man 2, is created from the remaining Venom cells in Peter’s body and Mr. Negative’s White Energy cells.
Anti-Venom’s abilities include Venom’s abilities along with some additional ones such as shapeshifting, regeneration, energy generation, host enhancement, external symbiote rejection, and sound immunity.
Carnage
Unlike the other symbiotes, the Carnage symbiote does not appear directly in Spider-Man 2. The symbiote is seen to be stolen from Oscorp by Cletus Kasady, another Marvel villain. Cletus wanted to use the Carnage to bring about an apocalyptic-like event known as the “Crimson Hour.” However, Spider-Man and Wraith manage to stop the Crimson Hour from happening, although Cletus escaped with the Carnage symbiote.
Some of Carnage’s abilities include regeneration, wall-crawling, Spider-sense immunity, genetic memory, shapeshifting, healing, and mind control.
Talking of symbiotics, the God of the symbiotics Knull also makes his presence felt in Spider-Man 2. Although he does not appear directly, a symbol on one of the meteors appears to be that of the symbiotics creator.
