Earlier in April 2022, Remedy Entertainment announced that fans would be treated with remakes of Max Payne, namely, Max Payne 1 and 2. Post that the studios took a sabbatical from revealing anything more about the details. It was a year later in May this year, that Remedy spoke about it again saying it was in its concept development stage.
Now again, during an interview with VGC, the Creative Director at Remedy Entertainment, Sam Lake spilled some more bans about the highly anticipated remake. Emphasizing on Remedy’s initial announcement suggesting the remake was going to be a significant undertaking, Lake said, “It is a significant undertaking in the sense that even if they are old games, just thinking about bringing them up to modern standards and combining them into one, you can see that it’s a big, big project.”
According to the Creative Director, the Max Payne remake project is indeed a large one, with a lot of work involved.
When is the Max Payne Remake releasing?
Remedy has already started work on one of its most anticipated titles since April 2022. The developer is currently working on the remake of the first two Max Payne games. The set of two games will be sold together as a single package releasing on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
The official release date or even a tentative date for the release of Max Payne remakes has not yet been announced by the developers. Currently, all that is known is that the game is in development. Fans may have to wait a little longer for an official announcement from the devs to know about the release date.
Remedy has struggled for more than a decade to get the sequel off the ground. Thus fans can expect the remake to be a bold and ambitious horror game. The original game was first launched back in 2001 by Remedy Entertainment for Microsoft Windows and in 2002 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Apple Macintosh. A sequel named Max Payne 2 was then released in 2003.
Remedy then sold the rights of Max Payne to Rockstar Games’ parent company Take-Two in 2002 for $34 million. A decade later Max Payne 3 was released by Rockstar Games in 2012. In April 2022, Remedy Entertainment and Rockstar Games announced that had got into an agreement and would reunite for Max Payne remake.
As per the agreement, Remedy is developing the games as a single title for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S using its flagship Northlight game engine. On the other hand, Rockstar will fund the remakes’ development budget.
After the launch of the game, after Rockstar has recouped its development, marketing, and other costs, Remedy will get an opportunity to earn royalties from subsequent game sales.
Regarding the agreement, Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games commented, “We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us about remaking the original Max Payne games. We are massive fans of the work the Remedy team has created over the years, and we can’t wait to play these new versions.”
The Detective series was a highly popular neo-noir third-person shooter video game series that revolves around the protagonist, Max Payne, who is a New York City police detective. With two of the biggest devs coming together, it will be interesting to see this fan-favourite game come to life on the next-gen consoles.
