Cyberpunk 2077 has enjoyed a long, and unusual journey so far. It has come from being busted at launch to being playable to gamers today, the game has come a long way. With the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty just around the corner, there are numerous ongoing debates about whether the developers will be able to deliver on all the pre-launch hype that it has created.
However, CD Projekt Red is leaving no stone unturned to make Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty the greatest one. The game will be released in two phases. It will have a free 2.0 update which will be released before the paid version.
CD Projekt Red will release Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty’s the much awaited version 2.0 update will launch on September 21, 2023, which will be completely free for players. Similarly, the paid version of Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty will be released on September 26, 2023.
A few days ago, the game’s official X (formerly Twitter) tweeted a post that clarified what changes will be made available for players as part of the game’s free 2.0 update, and which features will require players to buy the Phantom Liberty expansion.
Will Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty be free?
The update 2.0 released on September 21, 2023, will be a free version of Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty. The free 2.0 update will be made available on all PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S consoles. This means these players will be able to enjoy Cyberpunk 2077’s new features for free from September 21 onwards. However, the PS4 and Xbox One will not receive this free update, since they received their last major patch with last year’s version 1.6 “Edgerunners” update.
The new free update will include the following features:
- Redesigned skill trees and perks
- Revamped cyberware and new capacity system
- Vehicle combat and car chases
- Combat AI improvements
- New police system
- UI and UX improvements
- Loot, items, and crafting changes
- New radio stations (including Community Radio Station Growl FM)

However, it is to be noted that the free version includes only limited features. If the players wish to enjoy more and premium features players will have to avail the paid Phantom Liberty DLC version which will be priced at $29.99 (£24.99).
The paid version releases on September 26, 2023 will include the following features:
- Dogtown – a dangerous new district
- Brand-new storyline and characters
- New quests, gigs, boss fights, and more
- Vehicles missions and airdrops – ‘endless dynamic events’
- All-new Relic skill tree and abilities
- 100+ new items – weapons, cyberware, cars, and fashion
- Vehicle missile launchers
- Level cap increased to 60
With that kind of impressive line-up, it looks like developer CD Projekt Red is going all in with Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty. It also makes sense for CD Projekt Red to launch changes like these since Phantom Liberty is the only planned expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. Reportedly, the developers are also working on a sequel to the game however, that is still a long way to go.
