The Houston Texans showed their faith in quarterback CJ Stroud when they drafted him in this NFL draft. The young star was the 2nd pick in the first round for the team. Now, in his rookie season itself, he is expected to become the Texans’ starter for 2023 in place of Davis Mills.
According to reports, CJ Stroud will take the starter’s job from Texans’ current starter, Davis Mills. The 24-year-old Mills joined the team as the 67th overall pick in the 3rd round of the NFL draft 2021. Though nothing is confirmed, reports suggest that either Stroud or Mills will be the team’s starter.
Davis Mills signed a 4-year rookie contract with the Houston Texans. It was reportedly a $5.2 million contract with the team. As per reports, the deal included a signing bonus of $1,157,892, along with the same amount guaranteed. The average yearly salary of the quarterback stands at 1,304,383.
CJ Stroud, on the other hand, signed his first NFL contract with the Texans in July this year. It was a fully guaranteed deal for 4 years worth a massive $36.3 million. Stroud’s contract with the team included a signing bonus of $23,384,904, along with an average salary of $9,069,811.
The huge difference between the contracts of the two young stars in itself tells the whole story. The Houston Texans undoubtedly have strong faith in CJ Stroud. Hence, it won’t come as a surprise if the news of Stroud becoming the team’s starter turns out to be true.
What did CJ Stroud say about becoming the Houston Texans’ starter?
As the regular season is approaching, every team in the NFL has announced their starting quarterbacks. However, there’s just one team that hasn’t made the announcement, and it’s the Houston Texans. It seems like the team is still confused between CJ Stroud and Davis Mills. But, as per recent reports, Stroud is all set to become the starter for the team.
Everyone is wondering whether CJ Stroud will start the games for the Texans or not. However, the rookie player recently revealed that he’s “not worried” about whether he becomes the starter or not. The 21-year-old quarterback mentioned that he believes in “just getting better”.
“I ain’t tripping. Just do what’s on my plate… I got to focus on what we got going on in this locker room… And just getting better every day. It’s not about any of that stuff. It’s about competing every day and just getting better. That’s not my job. My job is to go out there and play. I got the fun stuff to do,” he said.

DeMecon Ryans, the head coach of the Texans, refused to reveal the name of their first game against the Baltimore Ravens. “In everybody’s case, we’ll see who earns what, and you’ll see our starters in Baltimore,” he said. It’s quite obvious that Ryan is not ready to make the revelation yet.
Whether CJ Stroud will start the game in the regular season for the Texans or not remains a mystery for now. Only coach Ryans can tell what’s going on in his brilliant mind. As for the fans, they must wait until week 1 to know the final decision of the team.
