Sergio Perez has struggled to keep his place on the top or even come close to Max Verstappen. After his two race wins, Perez has seen the back of Verstappen’s car for the rest of the season. The Mexican driver has a list of failed performances in his qualifications and races, pushing him back. Meanwhile, his teammate has won every single race so far for his team.
However, being 125 points behind Verstappen is something that might not be in favor of Perez. But this would not be the only time someone has failed to hold up to Verstappen’s standards. Alex Albon, Pierre Gasly, and many others have failed to be the “perfect second drivers” to Max Verstappen. Although Perez has been a great second driver in the eyes of Red Bull, he has not been up to par with his performance.
However, his performance has been increasingly getting better. Recently, he received a compliment from David Croft for his ability to sell the most Red Bull cans and merch. However, his recent performance and the ability to outperform his poor performances have also given hope to the Red Bull boss.
Christian Horner praises Sergio Perez for his resilience
Christian Horner displayed his feelings about the Mexican driver’s climb up the ladder in a few races. He gave Perez a pat on the back for being a great second driver to Max Verstappen. According to the team boss, being Verstappen’s teammate is the toughest job in Formula 1. However, Perez does a great job being a second to him.
Christian Horner told ESPN according to PlanetF1, “I mean, that’s probably the toughest job in Formula 1 is to be Max Verstappen’s team-mate, because the level that he’s operating at, I don’t think there’s a driver in Formula 1 that would be able to take him on in this car,”
And agreeably so, he was not lying. Verstappen has taken victory after victory one race at a time. Meanwhile, Sergio has fought his way back up to the top from the back. Even with the same car, there has been a vast difference in the two performances. But Perez has been a great second driver to Max. He has not only helped Verstappen to his victories but also had his share of achievements that he holds dear.
According to Horner, only a person who is resilient enough can be a great second driver to Perez, and he has proven to be just that. No matter the situation, Sergio has only put his best foot forward and tried to do better for his team.
