Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios is in the habit of stirring up controversy with his statements from time to time. Just last week Kyrgios was in the news for saying that he has done wonders for tennis. This time around, Kyrgios is in the spotlight again for his statement on Coco Gauff.
Gauff won the fourth WTA title of her career in Washington recently, by defeating Maria Sakkari in the final. This victory marked her first-ever title on her home soil.
But Nick’s dissatisfaction lay with Gauff’s prize money. Tennis podcaster Myles David highlighted that Gauff earned significantly less than Dan Evans, the men’s singles winner. Kyrgios tried to justify it by comparing it to Marketa Vondrousova earning more than Novak Djokovic.
What about slams? Do we do
This breakdown then? Vondrousova made more than Novak that week— Nicholas Kyrgios (@NickKyrgios) August 7, 2023
Vondrousova won the women’s singles championship by defeating Ons Jabeur in the Wimbledon final. Djokovic on the other hand, lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s final. So it makes sense, that Marketa earned more than Djokovic.
The Australian compared the two cases when a tweet only highlighted the difference in pay between men and women. Tennis fans are not happy with Nick’s statement and he even had to be reminded why Marketa made more than Djokovic.
Didn’t Vondrousova actually WIN the tournament? Of course she should’ve had a bigger check. And do you really want to go back and forth with me about women’s equality?

Nick Kyrgios is not new to generating controversies. His online behavior has irked tennis fans over and over again. But Kyrgios remains indifferent to them.

Coco Gauff is a rising teen sensation. She is a Grand Slam runner-up and has already won four WTA titles in her budding career. Gauff was absolutely phenomenal in her latest outing at the Citi Open in Washington.
With the US Open right around the corner, Gauff is back to playing at her best. She entered the tournament as the third seed and made it to the final without dropping a set. She dished out the same performance against Sakkari, as she did against her other opponents.
How much money did Gauff and Sakkari make at the tournament? Gauff has reportedly earned an outstanding $120,150 in prize money, whereas Sakkari earned $74,161. Men’s singles winner Dan Evans earned $353,445.

The two semifinalists Jessica Pegula and Liudmila Samsonova will pocket a decent $43,323. The athletes who were defeated in the quarterfinals will earn $22,800, while those who were eliminated in the second round will make $11,600.
From here on the amount decreases further. Players who lost in the first round will earn $8,320, while players eliminated from the second and first qualifying round will make $6,830 and $4,090 respectively.
With this victory, Gauff won her second title of the year. The first one came in Auckland in January. This win will surely boost Gauff’s confidence before the US Open.
