Ferrari has often projected itself as one of the most trustworthy racing outfits on the Formula 1 grid. While there are teams like Red Bull playing musical chairs with its drivers, the Maranello outfit has always expressed immense hesitancy to bid adieu to its drivers, regardless of their on-track performance. However, now, the situation has changed quite a bit and Ferrari could well follow in Red Bull’s footsteps in bringing about a refreshing change to its line-up.
Both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz are currently staring at an uncertain future in Formula 1, with both of their contracts set to dissipate at the end of 2024. In Leclerc’s case, several reports have suggested that Ferrari has already offered Leclerc a new five-year deal worth over $200 million. However, there has hardly been an acknowledgment from either of the camps.
Meanwhile, there’s Sainz who has been rather quiet amidst the growing rumors engulfing the Monegasque. As of now, Ferrari is yet to hold talks with Sainz, but it is unclear whether Fred Vasseur and Co. are even interested in retaining the Spaniard. Indeed, there have been rumors of Sainz showing interest elsewhere. However, Leclerc doesn’t want his teammate to leave the team.
Charles Leclerc wants Carlos Sainz to stay at Ferrari despite recent debacles
Unlike in 2021, the 2022 Formula 1 season unleashed a more competitive version of Sainz, as the Spaniard began showing immense resilience against his teammate, Leclerc. Consequently, this led to a bitter atmosphere growing between the pair. However, despite the occasional on-track debacles in recent times, Leclerc has requested Ferrari extend Sainz’s contract.
According to MARCA, Leclerc reckoned that the rivalry has always been non-volatile, and further assured they could maintain the camaraderie and deliver better results together for Ferrari. “I can work well with Carlos, even if there is a lot of competition between us,” he said.
There has been a similar piece of opinion from Ferrari’s team principal, Fred Vassuer. The Frenchman, too, is seemingly impressed with Sainz’s showing so far this season. “Sainz has the ability to maintain a constant pace, he doesn’t make a mistake,” he said.
Hence, with both the teammate and the team boss satisfied with the Spaniard’s presence in the team, one can only sense that a potential contract extension is in the making. However, on a much bigger picture, would Sainz sign the contract? Ferrari has been anything but clinical on the track with planning and strategizing which has more often than not taken hefty tolls on Sainz’s ultimate results.
