Justin Gaethje intends on taking a shot at the lightweight championship. The interim title was once on his waist back in May 2020 when he dismantled Tony Ferguson for a unanimous decision win.

Gaethje is back for a title shot as he is up against Dustin Poirier at UFC 291 for the vacant BMF title. A win for any of them will pose the next challenger for the winner of Makhachev vs. Oliviera 2.

With the question of who could dethrone a near perfect 24-1 record of Islam Makhachev, Justin believes Volkanovski has a chance since he had a close fight with Makhachev.

“I think Volkanovski is the answer for now, but I can’t wait to get in there. I know for a fact he’s not Khabib and I want to go in there and prove that.” Stated Gaethje.

Justin also pointed out the the clash with the then-undefeated divisional king, Khabib Nurmagomedov, who is a protege to Islam Makhachev and are in the same team.

Islam Makhachev's lone career loss came in his initial UFC appearance in 2015 against Adriano Martins. Since then, Makhachev has shown dominance, until his last fight against Volkanovski in February.

UFC made official Makhachev vs. Oliviera 2 last week as the headliner for UFC 294, giving ample time for Poirier or Gaethje, whoever wins the BMF title fight and gets a chance for lightweight gold.

Gaethje also mentioned about his healing process before a fighter steps in the cage and he stated how important it is to take time off between the fights.
