The beginning of a long and bitter rivalry may be traced back to that very moment. They went on to play 22 times between 2004 and 2019. Their overall head-to-head record was 20-2 in Williams' favor.
The Russian star revealed in her autobiography how the 23-time Grand Slam champion felt about her 2004 Wimbledon final loss.
No doubt the enmity between the two tennis greats was stoked by the competition. In 2017's "Unstoppable: My Life So Far," the Russian champion recounted the event in detail.
"Not long after the tournament, I heard Serena told a friend – who then told me – ‘I will never lose to that little b** again," Sharapova recalled in her autobiography.
